​​​​​​Become a driver assessment officer

ICBC–authorized driver certification facilities must use qualified assessment officers to conduct assessments of drivers enrolled in their program. Certified drivers can receive an exemption from testing by an ICBC driver examin​​er.

Types of assessment officer designation

Designation type

Has authority to…

Class 1, 2, 3 or 4

Conduct assessments to certify drivers for a Class 1, 2, 3 or 4 driver's licence.

Air brake

Conduct airbrake pre-trip assessments to certify drivers for an airbrake endorsement (restriction 15) on their driver's licence.

Motorcycle

Conduct motorcycle skills assessments to certify riders for a less restricted Class 6 or 8 learner's licence.

What are the requirements

To become an assessment officer, you must meet the instructor requirements and these basic requirements:

  • Currently hold the class of licence or restriction for the designation type for which you are applying.

  • Have the required minimum driver training or driving safety experience for the designation type for which you are applying.

  • Successfully complete an evaluation conducted by an ICBC driving school inspector.

Steps to become an assessment officer

​​​Complete the application package

The 1st step to becoming an assessment officer is to complete the application package — it includes:

  • Cover letter

  • Assessment officer application form

  • Assessment officer procedure manual (a commercial vehicle and motorcycle version is available), and

  • Applicant instructions.

The application form lists the prerequisites and requirements to become an assessment officer.

Send your completed application package to our office.

​​Undergo the assessment officer evaluation

Once your application has been reviewed, we will contact you.  If approved, we will let you know how you can arrange for an evaluation by one of our driving school inspectors.

After completing your evaluation, the inspector will provide comments and may give suggestions for improvement. The inspector is there to help you, so feel free to ask questions.

​​Get your certificate of qualification

Once you have successfully completed your evaluation, we will send you your assessment officer certificate of qualification — when you receive it, you can begin conducting assessments and certifying drivers at an ICBC-authorized driver certification facility.
