Become an air brake instructor
To teach air brakes, you must hold an air brake certificate of qualification issued by ICBC.
Eligibility
To become an air brake instructor, you must:
Be at least 19 years of age
Have at least 2 years' experience operating air brake equipped vehicles
Steps to getting your Air Brake Certificate of Qualification
1. Request a customized driving record.
Contact ICBC driver licensing to request a driving record that includes the date you received air brake endorsement.
Note: this record must be specifically requested, it is not available online or at driver licensing offices.
2. Complete an air brake instructor course.
Contact one of the instructor training facilities that offer air brake instructor training to enroll. The facility will enroll you in their course after they receive your driving record and confirm that you meet the requirements.
3. Receive your Air Brake Instructor Certificate of Qualification
After you successfully complete the air brake instructor training, the training facility will notify our office and we will send you a certificate of qualification.
You can start teaching air brake courses at a licensed driving school when you receive your certificate of qualification.
Note: it can take up to 4 weeks to receive your certification.
Guidelines for teaching an air brake course
An air brake course must:
Be taught by a licensed air brake instructor at an ICBC-approved driver training school
Include a minimum of 7 hours of theory training for single-unit vehicles and 9 hours theory for combination unit
For combination unit courses, the air brake instructor must have a GLP/GLT designation
On completing an air brake course, the student must be issued an air brake course card or letter that includes:
Student's name and driver's licence number
Name of the driving school
Driving instructor name and number
Number of theory hours completed
Course completion date
